The beautiful island Tinos in Greece was my inspiration for my Pattern Print Design Collection - which we had visited as a day trip from Mykonos and I am so glad we got to go!
It was the little town Volax that captured my attention - my artwork draws inspiration from the folk art on the pigeon house architecture, which are like works of art themselves along with the rustic doors with poetry and symbols. I have always been fascinated by old rustic doors from my visits to Greece as they have so much character, history behind them, these ones with the poetry was another level to experience :)
My design process for the Tinos Pattern Print Design Collection:
I started gathering all my images that I had photographed and was drawn to from my trip - I could start to see the theme, shapes, design elements coming through that I wanted to draw of the for the artwork.
Colours for this series I used blues, paired with orange and purples hues. Once happy with colours and images, I then put the moodboard together to refer back to when ready to start the next exciting process of creating the designs.
All the artwork crafted by hand on paper first as I like the feel when creating off the Ipad and also on a larger scale at A3 size so I don’t feel restricted when drawing.
I started creating with colouring pencils, afew of the designs are with this medium then experimented some of the designs with oil pastel crayons for the artwork.
Some designs where drawn with markers in black or dark blue - then I played with colour on the computer. Other artwork did not make it to the collection and I may revisit to work on again at a later stage. I sometimes take a break from 1 design to work on another and come back to it to see how I feel about it.
Once I had completed the artwork scanned into the computer, cleaned them up, created the designs. Sharing below some of the behind the scenes illustrations on paper.
I mocked the designs on various products such as bags, accessories, sarongs, towels, sleepwear, womens clothing, kids / babywear clothing, lifestyle products such as beach umbrellas and chairs - so a brand can see how they will look.
I share below snippets of 3 of the patterns and a print placement design available inside my Tinos Collection.
The Iris Pattern Design
The playful, colourful design of this pattern was hand-drawn with colouring pencils in organic, textured strokes a process I love creating, getting lost in the moment as I find meditative and relaxing.
The artwork was then brought into Photoshop, to clean and to create and play with the layout, composition then a repeat pattern design. This design will look great on womens resortwear, sarong or on childrens clothing.
The Kalimera Pattern Design
A fun, colourful, bold design was created with oil pastel crayons - which I enjoyed working with the medium and texture of it.
The words thalassa (sea), ilios (sun) louloudi (flowers) feature in the artwork drawing inspiration from the poetry on the doors of the island Tinos, Greece. Along with motifs inspired from the folk art on the architecture such as the sun, plant, various shapes expressed in a playful design.
The artwork was then brought into Photoshop, to clean and to create the layout, composition then a repeat pattern design - design would look great on dresses, resortwear or bags.
The Electra Print Placement Design
This design started as a doodle drawing with markers by hand on paper, some of the illustration elements featured are the sun, bird, bicycle, floral and various geometric shapes all coming together inspired by the folk art as well as the town.
Once I finished it, I liked how it turned out and couldn’t wait to scan it to play with it to see how it will look as a print placement design. I really like lino cut, printmaking and I was pleased how the outcome turned out for the design as it has a stencil style feel to it.
This design can be screen-printed or digitally printed and design would look great on lifestyle products such as beach towels, scarfs, sarong or pareo.
Are the designs available as non-exclusive or exclusive license?
My pattern and print placement designs from my collections currently are available to be licensed EXCLUSIVELY to a brand in a category area and the rights to use forever.
*For example: If a swimwear brand wants to license a design - I will therefore not license it to another swimwear brand. However, another brand in a different category such as homeware - bedding area will be able to license the same design.
